Pro's:
Light compared to some other laptops (LED vs. LCD screens usually)
Screen is very bright and easy to read
HDMI allows output to HDTV (also for using Media Center on the HDTV)
4GB RAM
Good battery life (it was running for 3.5+ hours the other day)
10-Key number pad
5-1 card reader (for plopping in an SD card from a digital camera/camcorder)

These are the ways the 17.3 inch screen helps. First the screen itself is really nice. My photos look fantastic and DVDs look superb. Netflix streaming and Hulu are so-so but that is more the limitations of software than of the screen itself. Many websites take advantage of the larger screen as well and it just feels right. It feels like my work desktop screen. Second and possibly of more value is the keyboard. BY FAR the best laptop keyboard I have ever used. It is even better than my stand alone keyboard at work. Finally a true full size, large key, awesome to type with laptop keyboard. And what I thought was a bad design aesthetically, the large blank space beneath the keyboard with just the mouse controls. Guess what? It is perfect for laying your hands down as you type. I know keyboard is not the first thing that comes to mind when buying a computer and it probably shouldn't be the first thing. BUT it should not be under-rated either.

As for the computer itself. I am really digging Windows 7. I bought this on Black Friday and so far no problems whatsoever. 4 GB is nice. The 6600 processors are nice solid performers. There are better in laptops but for me doing multimedia activities and home office activities this computer more than meets my needs. Everything worked great right out of the box. Webcam works great and not too much installed software. The student and home Office trial means if you end up buying it (Amazon usually has the best price around) it is already installed you just need the key. That was kind of nice. The 60 days of Norton gives you some time to try it, be protected, and make a decision on the security software you like so that is also helpful.

But ultimately what should make you choose this over the numerous other configurations HP offers is the screen size. Any slight added bulkiness and weight (around 6.5 odd pounds) is more than made up for me with how much fun it is to have a large laptop screen and a real full-sized comfortable, fantastic keyboard. Let others have their 10 inch products...17.3 for me from now on.

Reviews HP Pavilion DM3-1130US 13.3 Inch Laptop

After my brief time with my new HP, here are the pros and cons, for anyone considering it:

Pros:
1) It truly is a lightweight, portable model
2) The style is hard to beat, if you like the metal look
3) The keyboard style is different than what I'm used to, but I've found the chiclet style very use to type with
4) HP Quickweb is a useful, practical feature to get you on the Internet/listening to music or looking at photos without accessing Windows 7
5) Windows 7 itself rivals Apple's platform in the litany of user-friendly features and style. I was very impressed.
6) The battery life is about what was advertised- probably in the 4 hour range, if you're using wireless and looking at photos, etc. People who are only getting two hours probably are watching a movie and/or didn't let the battery fully drain the first time before they charged it.
7) The four USB ports, the SD slot and the exhaust fan on the side are all nice features.
8) I haven't had any problems with the mousepad- people who have commented negatively on it, I would guess, want the world's perfect mousepad. It's functional. And sure, it gets fingerprints on it, but that's because you use your fingers to use it. What do you expect? And are you trying to impress people with your fingerprint-less mousepad?
9) I was installing multiple programs and browsing the Internet all at once and experienced no interruptions or slow down. At least in that test, the RAM and processor are keeping up. I went with the AMD instead of Intel partly for cost (much cheaper), but also because I was told by some computer experts AMD might work a little faster. No regrets yet.

Most of the specs are readily available on Amazon, but you can get a more in-depth overview by going to HP's site and looking up the dm3z line in their Ultra-Portable category. The 1130 is essentially a later production run of the 1030, which is still available on Amazon as of this writing.

Back to what I was looking for;
Basically, I wanted a MacBook but only had about five hundred bucks to spend. I'm a Mac user normally but could not see paying so much for a laptop. I searched high & low and weighed several other options. In this laptop segment and at this price point, it is all about compromise and what you want as an end user. In this end, the 1130us was the best fit for me. I was able to find it on sale for under five hundred on the OfficeMax site and then found a [...] dollar rebate. I used that saving to buy a [...] , and so far that is working perfectly too. I was a little leery about getting an HP since they don't have the best reliability reputation, but I would expect more problem reports from a company that sells so many computers. My mother-in-law has a 3 year old Pavilion that still runs like new.

What I like about it:

1. It's fast, faster than I expected. Initial set-up was a snap. The 1.6GHz AMD Athon Neo X2 dual-core processor and ATI Mobility Radeon HD3200 graphics see to that. Perhaps not the best combo for intense Photoshop sessions or cutting edge 3D gaming, but I have several apps and browser windows open at once with no system slowdowns. Online video from various sources streams just fine and I've played a number of games (including Star Wars Battlefront) with no issues. The AMD cpu and ATI gpu combo uses more wattage than the Intel option, but I think you would sacrifice computing power for battery life if you went the Pentium or Core Duo route.

1b. 7200 RPM 320GB Hard Drive. Did I say it was fast? And spacious.

2. The screen. It is glossy, but not as bad as some and it is nice and bright. 13.3" w/ a 1366x768 widescreen resolution means things are a bit smaller than on a standard desktop monitor, but everything is nice and crisp and the colors are good. It seems much bigger. HD content looks great on it and the viewing angle isn't bad. I had a stuck pixel, but it went away. The lid opens about 135 degrees back so you can easily work with it on your lap. It has a nice firm hinge so there are no worries of it falling one way or the other.

3. Wi-Fi draft N. I've only had fast and excellent connectivity so far. Having bluetooth is nice too, but I've yet to use it.

4. Windows 7, not a cobbled Started Edition. Coming from OSX, I have to say I'm growing more and more impressed with the latest Windows OS. It seems to have more intricacies than with OSX, but I'm getting used to it and have to say the user interface is top notch. Before this, I've used XP and am so glad that Microsoft has finally refined their product. Connect a device for the first time and either the drivers are already there or they download automatically. Nice. Lots of eye candy too.

5. Touch pad. Some reviewers pan it, but I find it works well for me after a slight learning curve. Sure, it is the only fingerprint magnet on an otherwise lovely case, but I like the feel of the shiny chrome finish and find the multi-finger gestures useful. The "mouse-buttons" could be a little easier to depress, but that is a small quibble, just tap the pad. It is also very customizable to your specific needs. The 1030us touch pad had some wake-from-sleep issues, but that was fixed in the latest BIOS. I also use a [...] but have no problems adjusting to the touch pad if I leave mouse at the office.

6. 4 USB, 5-in1 card reader, 1 VGA, and 1 HDMI port. Connectivity ahoy!

7. Full sized keyboard. It took a little adjustment, but I like the quiet, island style keys. When in the proper position, I can type just as fast as with my desktop's keyboard. I measured it, and it is slightly LARGER than my G5's primary keyboard area!

8. The case. This is one sturdy feeling case with little or no flex that I can detect. You can hold it by a corner without fear. I love that it isn't a finger print magnet like so many others out there. The brushed aluminum finish is very attractive and gives it a high-end appearance.

9. It came with 4GB DDR2 ram, expandable to 8GB. With the 64bit OS, I could do this, but see no need to at the present time.

10. Cool. Even after all day use the air blowing out of the rear side exhaust vent is only slightly warm. The front wrist rests can get a little warm, but never uncomfortable (at least to me).

11. Quiet. If a completely silent room you can hear the faint breath of the fan, but otherwise it and the spinning hard drive are unnoticeable.

12. Well packaged. There are no disks included, but the manual and documentation are pretty clear.

13. Price. Find this on sale and you've got yourself one heck of a deal!

Reviews HP Pavilion DV6-2150US 15.6-Inch Laptop

The specs for this model are set well above what the average home owner needs today which (in my mind) future proofs it nicely. If you are on a tight budget you can get what you need for less (look at the HP Pavilion G60 line). If you have a little bit more to spend and you want some headroom to handle your computing needs for the next few years this is a great choice.

CPU - This is one of the first models from HP that sports Intel's new "Core i5" line of CPUs. The short version is that it outperforms the older "Core2" chips and is slightly better than the (also) new "Core i3" chips. As noted in the description it's 2.26GHz part that can "Turbo Boost" up to 2.53GHz. What isn't mentioned is that this is a dual core part with 3MB of cache. That may sound a lot like the old Core2 chips but don't be fooled: this chip will outperform the old Core2 by 20%-50%. If you are trying to decide between the "Core i5" and "Core i3" I would recommend the Core i5 to gamers and people who run high end applications (like CAD software) and the Core i3 for people running business applications (like MS Office) and web browsing. If you want to know more read on. If nerd stuff bores you then just trust me, this is a great chip to have in your laptop.

Okay here is why the Core i5 is a big deal: The Core i5 (and Core i3) have Intel's newest, fastest and smallest CPU core (also known as the "Westmere" core) which is two generations newer than the "Penryn" core used in the Core2 line. Because with each generation the parts get smaller they get cheaper to make. Also with the Westmere core Intel has bundled the chipset and a new graphics chip onto one package which also reduces cost (and allows Intel to do some new and cool performance tricks). One thing the Core i3 and i5 have that Core2 does not is "hyperthreading." Hyperthreading is a feature that makes two CPUs act like four. To do this Intel has enabled each CPU core to act on two software threads at once. So the two CPU Core i5 is almost as good as a four CPU part for a lot less money and requiring a lot less power (there are a few four core mobile CPUs out there but the battery life is terrible and I don't recommend them). Hyperthreading is something that every user can benefit from: no more watching your computer slow to a crawl because your anti-virus kicked in. Windows 7 just dumps that off on a new thread and you keep humming along surfing the web or playing a game. The main difference between the Core i3 and i5 is that the Core i5 has "Turboboost" (which can speed up your CPU or the graphics chip as needed) and the Core i3 does not. If you aren't stressing the CPU or the graphics chip then the Turboboost found in the i5 isn't going to do a lot for you.

RAM - 4GB of DDR3 RAM running at 1066MHz is combined with a 64bit OS to which should provide more than enough memory for pretty much any application you can think of outside of extremely high end gaming. Note that most older notebooks come with "DDR2" and this one has "DDR3". The main difference is that "DDR3" uses about 20% less power "DDR2" which of course equals slightly better battery life.

HDD - The 500GB drive is far more space than most users need (few people will use more than 100GB). HP also offers 320GB and 640GB drives in some models. This one runs at 7200RPM but HP has version that run at 5400RPM. The 7200RPM drive offers better performance but the failure rate is slightly higher than the slower 5400RPM drives. I have a slight preference for the slower drive just because I hate HDD failures but honestly the 7200RPM drives have improved to the point where there's not much difference in failure rates anymore.

Graphics - This model is using uses Intel's new "HD" graphics which is vastly superior to their old "4500MHD" chip. You can actually do a some 3D gaming on this notebook though newer high-end 3D games will need to run at reduced settings. Online games like World of Warcraft will run best at reduced settings. It can do 1080p HD graphics but notice this model doesn't have a Blu-ray drive so I'm not sure it matters that much (the only DV6's I know of with Blu-ray are custom models ordered direct from HP).

Display - I don't like that about a year ago HP switched the DV6 from a full 16" display to the slightly smaller 15.6". Still the 1366 x 768 widescreen LED Brightview display on this model doesn't disappoint. Indoors it is brilliant with surprisingly strong blacks (too many notebook displays are all brightness with no depth). Outdoors you'll have some issues with glare but it's better than a lot of competitors. I like that the screen provides a decent amount of vertical space without overdoing it. The difference between the 15.6" and a 14" is surprising (go compare them in a store if you haven't had a chance).

Sound - Surprisingly good sound for a notebook. The speakers are well positioned and deliver a good range. I've heard better but it was on a $3K notebook.

Battery - HP bundles 12 cell Lithium-Ion battery on this model but most DV6 models have a 6 cell. If you are on the road a lot the 12 cell is nice. Home users who plan to plug in a lot probably won't care. Personally I prefer the 12 cell. The 6 cell will give you 2-4 hours of real use and the 12 cell will give you 3-6 hours (HP claims "up to seven hours" on their website but that's only if you do everything possible to conserve power). The 12 cell will bulge out a little in the back and adds about 1/5 of a pound to the weight.

Operating System - This model the "Premium" version of Windows 7. The "SB" (small business) models have the Win 7 "Professional" version. Win 7 premium is fine for most users but the Pro version lets you back up over a network and better support for older software (it can basically run Windows XP in the background for your older programs). Most homes users will be fine with Win 7 Premium but if you have a lot of old software you may consider getting a notebook with Win 7 Pro (which will add a little to the cost of the notebook).

Optical Drive: The standard HP DVD/CD RW Drive with Lightscribe. If you haven't used Lightscribe it basically allows you to burn black text or images onto LightScribe compatible CD or DVD media. A typical image burn takes 20 minutes or so. It's nice to have but be aware the images are a little dull. I've noticed mine fade over but I mostly burn copies of CDs for my kids and they are rough on them.

I don't have any serious "cons" for this computer. The "Touch Media Controls" for things like the volume (as opposed to buttons you push) are a little odd at first but we got used to them quickly and hey, they look cool when they light up. I also don't find the included remote to be that useful but anyone planning to hook this up to their TV might like it. I suspect most people will just put in a drawer and forget about it.

For those who want everyday computing capability at a great value, the Compaq Presario CQ61 series Notebook PC delivers in style. However, pictures in its product page might be a deceiving. Although they are shown in the pics, this model does NOT come with a webcam and HDMI. I was surprised when I opened the box and found this truth. Hence, I further digged into the specification sheet and found that I was wrong. Beware, if you think this is really a steal with a webcam and HDMI for this low price, you may just make a mistake like what I did.

In all, I do not regret my decision of buying it at all. You can buy a netbook for $299.99. But I will pay a little bit more to go with this notebook ($379.99) with full capability, faster processing speed and a DVD burner in trade of the mobility. Now, I am going return my cute but slow netbook...

Reviews HP Pavilion DV4-2161NR 14.1 Inch Laptop

I also love how its 14" monitor, so I can take it anywhere and fit it into any bag. It has a very sleek and glossy exterior. A little bit of work to keep clean, but that's no reason not to buy a computer. The speakers are great for a laptop. I was actually surprised how clear sounds and music was. As with most HP laptops, you get the lightscribe burner, which is great, but it also comes with a disc replacement thing so if you don't care to use a disc drive, you can remove it and save some weight. But really it doesn't weigh that much.

The only downfall I have with this computer is the slightly low battery life. I think a little bit of that might be my fault cause I just plugged in and played rather than letting the battery charge fully first before I started playing with it.

I have always been an HP fan so I love it even more. I love the look and feel. The graphics is wonderful and the brightview screen enhances the colors. All the features makes it very exciting to use and I love the fact that it has a built in webcam and wireless network ready.

I'm very happy with this laptop. Works great, is fast, clear picture, and love the Windows 7 vs. my old Vista. Only gripe is the battery lasts under 2 hours with normal use - not the 3.75 hours listed. We keep ours plugged in mostly, and use on the go as necessary.

Reviews ASUS U20A-B2 12.1-Inch Black Laptop

Pros:

SIZE!! I really think this is the perfect size form factor for anyone who has to carry a computer on a daily basis; not so thin I am afraid I will snap it in half but not so think and heavy I break my arm carrying it to work (my old laptop was 6 lbs and this one is 4, soooo much better). It's about the size of two or three magazines stacked on top of each other. It slips right in my briefcase and I hardly notice it. The screen size is actually more than big enough, I absolutely love the size of this thing.

ASUS backing their product - ASUS offers a free 2 full years of warranty on this product plus a free year of accidental damage coverage. To buy this for an apple costs $200 at least. I know they're good for it because they offered to fix my computer when I had an issue (see support)

Light up keyboard - this wasn't even on my radar but now that I have it it's probably my favorite feature. It just looks good. I can type with ease at night while I'm watching TV or any dim light situation. You might think you wouldn't use it but I was surprised by how convenient it is. Also, when it's bright it automatically shuts itself off to save battery. I read a lot about this "keyboard flex" issue. I now see what people were talking about. There is a liner/spacer cutout which lays between the keys, when you type the thin sheet moves a little, I mean a tiny bit. I really don't know what these people are freaking out about, the keyboard is a joy to type on, good size and I like the chicklet keys, no complaints at all. Don't let this "flex" non issue worry you.

Mouse pad - I've found this to work really well, way better then my old one, it also lights up when you move your finger around but you can easily turn that feature off if it annoys you. It incorporates the multi touch functions I've seen on some friends Apple laptops (i.e. two fingers down scrolls the page down, three finger tap is right click) this has proved to be very useful and convenient.

Power Cable - Something I never thought about was the plug it comes with is about half as heavy as my old one, the block in the middle is really small and light and I never realized before how annoyingly heavy and bulky my old one was.

Battery - it gets about 5 solid hours on the high performance setting. I haven't tested it on battery saver because it works so well in high performance and I'm rarely away from power for more than 5 hours. ASUS offers a really nice utility called Power4Gear, which allows you to manage your battery by controlling your processor and screen output. I haven't used it that much yet though. The 9 cell battery is not currently available; ASUS doesn't know when it will be.

Utilities - the computer comes with 15 utilities of various usefulness, some are really nice some are kind of useless but the ones that are useful are very nice to have. Also these, Norton and office trial are the only bloatware on the computer which is nice.

Ports - this has all the ports I need and none of the ones I do not, 3 usb, hdmi, multi card, vga, gigabit - its perfect.

Camera works well, as does the mic, picture comes through clean. There is a little green light that comes on when the camera is in use which is nice.

Cons:
Price - ~$950 is a lot to spend on a computer these days. I got lucky and bought the discontinued U20A-B1 for a huge discount , the B1 is the same hardware just with Vista 32 bit, I then upgraded it to Win 7 Pro 64 bit. You might check and see if you can find the B1 for cheap as they are trying to get them out the door right now. Just beware of the upgrade to 64 bit as it caused me several headaches (see support below). Everything is solved now and I'm finally content with my operating system.

Fingerprints - Wow, seriously wow...it is as though this is made of some magical material which sucks the oils out of your skin and glues them to itself. This is my least favorite thing about it, if this was made with the aluminum case I really would say it is perfect. Just know you are going to have an oil caked finger print laden computer.

Screen - I had a really nice screen on my old computer and am still adjusting to this one. On its own it is a gorgeous display but the contrast in certain cases is not good. For example when excel is open you can't see the light lines separating the cells. I've found if you tilt the screen way down you can improve the contrast quite a bit. Again this is a minor issue but still a negative.

Hard drive - I don't know why but I have a pet peeve about hard drive noise, this one is constantly doing that muted click-reading noise that my computer in the 90's did, it drives me crazy, so much so I ponied up and bought a solid state drive to eliminate the issue. I doubt it would bother most people but it was really annoying to me.

Speakers are pretty weak but I wasn't really ever planning on using this as a stereo. They are functional for the occasional time I want to show someone a video.

Also:

Support - I've found the support people to be all around courteous and responsive individuals. Because I upgraded from 32 bit vista to 64 bit win 7 I had to call them about 6 times for driver issues. Each time they pitched a fit that I didn't use the ASUS windows 7 upgrade and said I had to reformat back to vista to fix the problem. I did this and ended up wasting 8 hours of my time, it did not fix the issue and I found the solutions using google. They did offer to RMA my computer and fix it though and really were trying to help they just had no idea how to solve the problem I was having.

Processor - this is not a beastly processor, it suits my needs perfectly but I'm not sure it would be good for any serious gaming. I might try to play a few games on it later though and will update.

Summary:
Despite the cons I listed I am thrilled with my purchase. This is the perfect combination of the best features of netbooks (small size and portability) and laptops (computing power, optical drive, hdmi). For my specific needs this thing is perfect. I give it a very high recommendation.

Update 1:

been a couple more weeks and I am even more pleased with this machine. I recognized the utility of the optical drive when I absolutely had to have one three times for work randomly. I knew this was going to happen and decided my paranoia would have meant I would be carrying a stupid external optical drive back and forth. I'm really glad I have an internal one, one less thing to worry about.

I played around with one of the ASUS utilities called splendid utility and was able to drastically improve/darken the contrast, this screen is really nice now. No complaints.
I sold my old computer and when I opened it up to reformat it and realized how unnecessarily huge it was compared to this thing, I had a hell of a time trying to type on it and the screen looked dull and dark. It just goes to show how fast I adapted to this thing.

Hold Crap the SSD is faaaantastic, and extremely easy to install. Take out two screw and pop out a panel, take out three screws and pop out the hard drive, then 4 more screws to get the hard drive out of its frame, stick in SSD and screw back in, done and done computer is now twice as good as it was. It really seems like the processors aren't working as hard as well but I didn't test it before. I got the entry level/low end Kingston v-series 128 gb model which will be discontinued in February and is about half as good as high end models but also half the price and three times better than the one that came in this thing. The computer boots super fast, it actually made me laugh the first time it did because it was so strange. All applications open in 1-5 seconds (the most dramatic improvement is in Microsoft outlook which has always taken forever to open), it is lighter, uses less power(could be impacting my battery life statements), way more durable and dead quiet no noise other than the fan which I have to hold up to my ear to hear...it is absolutely worth the cost in my opinion. Just amortize the time savings over the period you will be using the computer and put a price to your time saved. Plus the v-series came with a little kit that turned the old hard drive into a removable drive and really nice imaging software that transferred an exact copy of the old hard drive to the new one so I didn't have to relive my driver nightmare. But I digress...

I found the multi-touch driver and installed that. I didn't; realize there were about 20 gestures you could do on it, and you can edit what motions cause what. I change right click to two fingers taping. There are a lot of cool things you can do with this. One other thing I forgot to mention is that a lot of the new ASUS computers have weird spaced dots for the touch pad that a lot of people have complained about. This one has a really nice smooth touchpad that is really nice to use. My other one was made of metal and was not nearly as good.

Reviews ASUS K70IJ-C1 17.3-Inch Black Laptop

Got this laptop from amazon almost a month ago (with a lower price than the current one) and so far so good. Turned it on when I first received it and let the ASUS ran the initial setup (that took a while). Then, off Windows 7 and on Ubuntu 9.10 (64bit). Everything is working fine except the webcam is upside down (one star off) so I needed to place a patch to reverse the image back to right side up. Also got the Logitech VX Nano cordless mouse to pair it with this laptop.

If you're looking for a nice laptop and don't care much if it doesn't come with an nVidia graphic card, then this is a nice laptop. Fast and bright. Will receive a long HDMI cable (also from amazon) in the next few days to connect it to my tv. Don't think that would be a problem to get it to work.

Now, I just need to get a wireless printer (to replace the old HP 712C) so I can print from this laptop anywhere in the house.

Reviews ASUS U50Vg-AM1 Thin and Light Laptop

I love the keyboard (including the backlighting). The screen resolution is poor considering the price of this laptop, but that's not what I was buying it for. I haven't tried the high def output yet, but I have a feeling it's great. Battery life is very good. I miss the fingerprint logon, as the facial recognition isn't nearly as functional, but not a deal-breaker.

It gave ASUS a chance to move beyond motherboard production into full-blown computer manufacturing. And a good move it was! I'm very happy with this unit. It's fast; it's loaded with features (some of which I didn't even know it had); it's got a two-year warranty; battery life is double anything I've experienced before; and I absolutely love the lighted keyboard.
As for Windows 7, it's taking me a while to get used to it. XP is still near and dear to my heart and ingrained in my brain. But the quick boot-up, and ASUS' ability to start up for certain purposes without even using Windows 7, are winning me over.
So far my only complaint is about the glossy black finish -- which probably is better than a police technician for collecting fingerprints. I prefer the black matte finish of my Lenovo.

My only complaint is with the touchpad, although this complaint can cause some headaches. First off the location and style of the touch pad is pretty bad. Because it isn't a different color from the rest of the case and the indentation is not very deep, its really easy to not truely know your on it unless you actively concentrate on where your finger is, so it's a lot less natural than other touch pads. Secondly the location is horrible. When I type with the keyboard i fairly often bump the touchpad with my left-hand palm, which causes the mouse to click occasionally. If I'm in a word processor or web browser this can be extremely aggravating as I can change web pages or where I am typing if the cursor is at those areas.

Thirdly, either the software or the sensor is not the greatest. About 10% of the time my clicks don't register or moving across the screen registers as a click. I'm hoping once i get time to find any updated drivers for the touchpad (whose website I tried but wasn't working when I looked this weekend) will fix this, otherwise it's gonna be a long 4 years before I get a new computer.

In my quest to replace my laptop I was stubborn & hesitant at first to stray from Dell having owned 3 laptops previously from them with no issues and nothing but excellent experience. I went shopping at a local Electronics retailer and stumbled upon this machine which is lesser known in the Southern US, however I have now learned they are the 3rd largest seller of laptop computers in the world and have won numerous awards. This machine is FAST it boots up to start menu in a mere 8 seconds flat which is impressive. Although there are faster machines out there, for the price of this one it is well worth it for under $1000. The screen picture is crisp as no other and is LED HD and has one of the best resolutions out there, great for movies and other video media. The internal sound card combined with alltec lansing speakers provide for an excellent sound also for music, etc. ALthough not as fancy to the eye or as gimicky as a Dell XPS this is as compatible as it gets and at a better price.

Excellent customer support. This laptop runs great out of the box with only a small about of junk software. Mainly ASUS applications showing you some of the cool things you can do. Windows 7 so far has impressed me but be aware you will need to do a large amount of updates. (1 gig or better) The HDMI interface works great for connecting your HDTV to play dvd media and web content.

This is the first laptop I have owned in a long time. My current computer is a Dell desktop. So far the laptop is performing at top speed. I love it!
Pros: Huge screen that is not distorted. Super fast processor, awesome warranty, great features(HDMI that I connect to my bedroom tv)...
Cons: Windows 7 - if you have older software that you want to install good luck. It may or may not work.
I was able to install MS Office 2003 with Outlook. I had trouble installing Outlook 2003 but eventually got it to work. Printer had problems too but I installed the Vista update and then 7 and it worked. Same with my MP3 player.
Windows 7 started out as not my favorite windows but it is growing on me.

Would highly recommend this laptop!

I will just go on first impressions. Really, this thing has just about everything you need! Connecting to my wireless router was a snap, and I really love the Express Gate feature, which lets you surf, among other things, without booting into OS. Quad core processor and 240m video card in this price range sealed the deal for me. The screen resolution is 720p, looks good to me, and the dvd player up-converts the signal to 1080p. Nice sound system also.
Also came with a free case and small wired mouse.
Now the cons;
Has the usual bloatware, which is to be expected, but to use them you need account names, keys ect...I haven`t found this information as yet. Why wasn`t it supplied on a card or sticker in the owners booklet?
Overall I am very happy with this product, and I am already looking at the new Asus Eee notebook with dual core Atom processor for my wife.

I've had this laptop for about 3 weeks and have been fiddling with the touchpad sensitivity and trying to get up the learning curve for using it. My research tells me that it is an older hardware version than what the touchpad manufacturer now offers. Looks like ASUS cheaped out on this. Either that or it's a technical battle with ASUS and their customers as the losers.
Bottom line, it's disappointing and just doesn't work like it should. It takes away from the overall experience and ASUS should have their heads examined for making this offering.

The web cam based log in feature is fairly reliable and also records images of anyone who has a failed log in attempt. It needs decent lighting to get the image right and I don't know if it can handle things like glasses or hats, but you can always log in manually. Unlike many other out of the box computers, this one has relatively little junk software pre-installed. And most of the pre-installed software is something useful, like Trend Antivirus software, Adobe's .pdf reader, and the video based log in software.

The wifi card seems to work fine and is holding a good connection to an access point that was very flaky on my old laptop. I had to download about 600mb worth of updates for Windows, but all of the ASUS software and drivers were up to date.

In terms of performance, this unit is a great value for the money. Programs load off the drive quickly and World of Warcraft runs at ~80 frames per second with most video options maxed out. My unit shipped with the ATI 4670 chip instead of the advertised 4665, which was an unexpected slight upgrade.

The system is very quite at the default settings and battery life is in the 2.5-3 hour range when wifi is active. The hard drive is also very quite and were it not for the light, I'd have no idea it was active.

ASUS's included 1 year drop/spill/accident coverage and 2 years parts and labor warranty also make this system a cut above the rest. Be sure you register with ASUS to be covered under the accidental damage coverage, though.

The top row of buttons for functions like disabling the wifi, changing power modes, etc have labels that are virtually impossible to see. They're somehow etched or embedded into a chrome strip above the function keys, but there is next to no contrast between the the label and the chrome bar. The laptop's slick finish also makes it an absolute finger print magnet. But, in my opinion, neither of these two issues were worth deducting a star from the rating.

Over all, this is a great laptop if you want something fast and well rounded and ASUS's included 1 year accident and 2 years standard warranty are icing on the cake.

Reviews ASUS K50IJ-D2 15.6-Inch Laptop

Just received the ASUS K50IJ-D2 after doing much research. I wasn't in the market for an ultra-portable machine since I wanted a full keyboard and a built-in disc drive. Overall, when comparing specs line by line with other machines (processor, hard drive size, memory, etc.) the ASUS was always at least $50 cheaper than other brands. Sometimes as much as $200 cheaper. The machine is fast, runs great, and so far has done everything as expected.

Cons (as compared to other machines):
-Basic black appearance (not hip)
-touch pad has no dedicated scroll area (purely a preference issue)
-no volume control on the keyboard area (slightly less convenient than HP DV7 for example)

Pros:
-As mentioned above- more machine for your money

NOTE:
The ASUS K50IJ-X8 appears to be exactly the same machine as this one, only with a larger hard drive (500 GB vs. 320 GB), and the X8 is cheaper!

Pros:
-Very powerful.. CPU , GPU , HDD (7200rpm).. it got 5.9 on windows experience index because of the HDD, the CPU/RAM gets 6.4 & GPU gets 6.6 .that's with win 7 64bit, it got as far as I remember ; 5.4 or 5.9 on the CPU with vista 32bit that came with it..
-Sooo cheap for such powerful components ( d1 is $850 on amazon, d2 is $900 after rebate)
-Looks nice; not super nice, but nice..
-Very well ventilation design .. for all that power, it doesn't get hot.
-included mouse (not wireless) and bag...

Cons:
when you have so much power, the input devices should be up to the same standard; they are not
-No backlit keyboard.. I know; I knew this before buying it; but when you get it and can't see the f1/f12 keys in the dark and can't see the WIFI / Bluetooth either ; not even the power button if it is not turned on ...
-FN key on left of CTRL key ... VERY VERY Stupid .. I already knew, but thought I can adapt; not yet..

Reviews ASUS UL20A-A112.1-Inch Silver Laptop

Pro's:
1. SMALL FOOTPRINT & LIGHT WEIGHT. The footprint of the laptop is similar to an 8.5"x11" sheet of paper (just slightly narrower and slightly longer), and at 3.3lbs, putting it in your briefcase or backpack is no more burdensome than an extra book or binder.
2. EXCELLENT KEYBOARD. The relatively large "chiclet" keyboard makes for an effortless typing experience.
3. PERFECT SCREEN SIZE. With a 12.1" 1366x768 screen, you're getting the resolution of a 13.3" laptop in a smaller package. At 130 pixels per inch, text on the 12" screen is often pretty small, but still acceptable. I would however advise against smaller screens (e.g. 11.6") at this resolution.
4. EXCELLENT PERFORMANCE. Despite the low clock speed, the UL20A's Core 2 Duo is MUCH faster than any Intel Atom. HD YouTube videos play flawlessly at ~67% CPU utilization, and general performance seems much smoother than on my old netbook. I especially notice the difference when scrolling through PDF's, which was often very slow and jerky on my EeePC.
5. EXCELLENT BATTERY LIFE. After 4.5 hours of mixed light web browsing, email, and PDF viewing, I still had 40% charge left. If the battery continued to be depleted at that rate, you'd end up with--that's right--exactly the quoted 7.5 hours! I used Windows 7's "Balanced" power scheme (not any of Asus's Power4Gear modes). After some testing, I can confirm that the processor will ramp up to max frequency during heavy usage with this mode, so there's no reason not to leave it in "Balanced" all the time.
6. VERY QUIET. Even when using it in a quiet room, it's nearly impossible to hear any fan noise.
7. EXTRA WARRANTY. The UL20A comes with 1 year of "accidental damage" coverage.
8. LITTLE THIRD-PARTY BLOATWARE. The only (non-Asus) bloatware was an anti-virus software trial and some silly games. I uninstalled these in minutes (and replaced the A-V trial with Microsoft's free Security Essentials program).
9. WINDOWS 7 HOME PREMIUM. Unlike most netbooks, which ship with either Microsoft's ancient Windows XP or the crippled Windows 7 Starter Edition, this laptop comes with the full "premium" version of Microsoft's brand-new OS.

Con's:
1. ANNOYING TOUCHPAD. The texture of the touchpad causes way too much friction, which irritates your finger. The pointer also periodically freezes, placing a strange gray circle near the cursor (this is probably some stupid Synaptics feature I haven't figured out how to disable yet).
2. GLOSSY SCREEN. This causes annoying reflections, but in fairness most laptops have these nowadays.
3. ABSURD JUMBLE OF ASUS UTILITIES. Asus includes nearly a dozen separate utilities for various functions. Most have weird names, and it's not apparent what they do until you click on them. They also each seem to have their own distinct (amateurish) user interface. At the very least, Asus needs to cut the number of included programs in half (both through consolidation and elimination of pointless and redundant functions).
4. DISAPPOINTING LCD QUALITY. As was the case with my EeePC's screen, the contrast is too high, and there's a significant blue-ish hue by default. I do NOT recommend this laptop for SERIOUS photo editing (i.e. not for professionals). It should be fine for most users though.

Summary:
This notebook seems to hit a sweet spot between netbooks and full-size laptops: You're getting an almost full-size keyboard, adequate screen resolution, snappy performance, and Windows 7 Home Premium, while retaining much of the portability, low-cost, and battery life of a netbook.

Pros:
- T6600 Core 2 Duo (not the Pentium Dual Core, lower-end C2D, ULVs, or Atoms)
- Relatively quiet and light (5.8 lbs)
- Big hard drive (mine had a Seagate Momentus 5400.6)
- Screen has relatively good viewing angles, horizontal and vertical
- Pretty good fit and finish for a plastic casing (although there's a somewhat flimsy lid that is separate from the battery)
- 4 USB ports
- VGA output is crisp (to 1280x1024, didn't try bigger)
- I haven't noticed the palm rest getting warm at all ... but you're not playing 3D games are you?
- You can select one language during boot up that's set forever, that is, until you restore from the recovery partition. The first time I chose Traditional Chinese. Works great. I restored (press F9 at boot) and selected English. Works great, didn't need to put in DVDs, and all the software reappeared. I even choose the option to use one C:\ drive, instead of the default 60% C:, 40% D:.
- Opening the notebook casing is easy -- find the "electronic - hardware" version (not the "hardware" version) of the manual on Asus's web site (search for K50, then click Download, then Manuals). The hard drive is easily replaceable. Relatively clean layout so I can imagine blowing out dust bunnies will be easy.
- Includes Office Home & Student 2007 (Word/Excel/PowerPoint/OneNote) pre-installed WITHOUT a product key. It asks for that so I assume you just punch one in and everything's great.
- Includes a trial of Trend Micro Internet Security for antivirus protection pre-installed.
- Aside from the Asus utilities, relatively little bloatware
- Turned off all of Win7's eye candy. Don't need that.
- 1-year international warranty. Includes accident protection (register for this within 60 days on the Asus U.S. web site, and it's non-transferrable from the original owner). No paperwork on extending the warranty. We're trying our luck in case the computer breaks down in < 1 year and they give us a hassle about it being a gift and the warranty being valid.

Cons:
- A bit fat
- The screen has a blue tinge, just like with Asus's TN LCD displays. You get used to it though.
- Glossy screen (reflections), not matte
- Two-finger touchpad scrolling is too sensitive out of the box with Firefox (although it might be okay with IE). Turning it all the way down, it's fine.
- The numeric keypad uses smaller keys! Difficult to use for folks with big hands.
- The arrow keys don't have space around them (and actually the right arrow key is bumped into the numeric keypad section), so you need to learn where they are.
- The keyboard and touchpad are on the left side of the computer because of the numeric keypad. You quickly get used to that, though, so no biggie.
- The touchpad buttons require some pressure to click, but you get used to it.
- 4 GB maximum memory. Just 1 user-accessible memory slot which contains 2GB. No biggie.
- No DVI. No port replicator option with that option.
- No Bluetooth, FireWire, eSATA, ExpressCard/PCI Express slot
- Integrated Intel graphics (not for 3D gaming, but great for 2D apps)
- The T6600 doesn't support Windows 7's XP compatibility mode. Most of the Win7 Home Premium notebooks I've seen have a CPU which doesn't support XP mode. Only Win7 Professional and higher supports VT mode anyway. Does XP mode matter at all? I have no idea. Search the Internet for that.
- It doesn't wake up when you open the lid. It does sleep when you close the lid. Yes, I checked the settings. Tip: Change the close-lid behavior to Sleep instead of Hibernate for a faster sleep, but battery will drain faster.

I was looking to replace my Asus W3V that I purchased back in 2005. It has been an excellent laptop with minor issues regarding the Asus update utility. I was hoping for the same build quality and material quality as the W3V with this purchase. They did not miss much...

One thing to note...I've been researching this laptop for a few months and have not received confirmation on how many hard drive bays are in it. There are two for the record with the one located in the middle of the laptop being empty. I like the keyboard a lot. I tried out the Asus G51 at XestXuy and found that this one is of much higher quality. The keyboard of the M60J is not backlit like the G51 though. This is one feature that I wished it had. I've been messing with it for about 3 hours on my lap and it gets warm but not as hot as my W3V.

I do not care for the plastic used on the bottom of the laptop. It has a texture to it and seems cheaper/of lesser quality than the material used on my W3V which is finished smooth. It may not be lesser quality but that's my first impression...It still seems sturdy. The two push buttons under the touch pad are certainly worse than those on the W3V. They are not a deal-breaker for me but they are a bit squooshy and hard to push...Maybe they will improve with use?

I would also prefer the outer screen cover be made of brushed metal like the W3V instead of the fake brushed metal plastic...I have the same preference with the material used on the keyboard deck. I would also prefer the lid extend flush at the front instead of being offset short of the edge.

Evaluation
----------
The reviewed unit meets the claim of it being a all-in-one solution. While it is not likely that any individual user would take advantage of all its features on a regular basis, it is reassuring to know that the features are there. The supplied software and the printer's own console interface allow for a tremenduous amount of flexibility and customization. Some of the more advanced features will require an above-average level of computer expertise but, even without a lot of customization, this will be a useful, worthy printing/faxing/copying/scanning appliance.

While the superior quality of output would make this printer a good 'small office' candidate, its speed would probably disqualify it if the small office was doing any significant amount printing. I provided some personal benchmarks so that any prospective small business buyer could decide. As a 'home' printer, this comes as close to perfect as they come. I will be using it as a home printer so please do interpret my rating within that context.

A minor observation regarding 'design'. I found it interesting that some of the functions available on the touch screen are duplicated on physical buttons on the printer's console. This was striking because I actually saw this model for sale at New York's Fifth Ave. Apple store. It immediately occured to me that an Apple designer would have none of those buttons if allowed to redesign the product. This is not criticism, it's only an observation, also prompted by the fact that, for example, when specifying the number of copies to be printed, I could NOT use the physical number pad but had to punch the number on the virtual keypad displayed on the touch screen.

The strong, almost violent shaking the printer brings itself to when not on a perfectly steady surface was a little disturbing to me. I have little doubt that, if improperly placed, the printer would quickly lose its printheads alignment and it might even experience other technical trouble.

Finally, I am happy that the HP Tech support solved my Vista-related problem but it would have been better if a printer that was manufatured only a few days before I received it had an updated CD or, at least, a flyer advising Vista users how to obtain the updated driver.

Considering all of the above, the this printer gets a strong, very positive 4 stars.

First impressions
-----------------

The HP Officejet Pro 8500 Wireless All-In-One Printer integrates print, copy, fax, scan document and photo-processing functions. HP supplies the printer itself, 'starter' ink cartridges, print heads and a phone wire. Ethernet or USB cables are not included. Thin manuals are provided for wireless and FAX setup. A quick installation poster is provided as well. The full 300+ manual can be downloaded from the HP site. The CD has drivers for the several supported Operating Systems and a number of additional applications such as OCR (optical character recognition).

Besides the Ethernet and USB ports, other physical IO include 2 telephone jacks in the back and slots for several types of memory cards in the front. The printer can be controlled from a PC or directly through a touch-screen color display and several buttons that generally duplicate options on the menus available through the touch-screen interface. To satisfy energy saving concerns, the printer goes to sleep if not used for a while but it can be reactivated by either touching the screen or one of the buttons or remotely from a networked workstation.

Software
--------
Drivers are available for the most recent flavors of Windows (Vista, XP, 2000) and for the Mac. It can be configured to either a local printer, connected to a PC via a USB cable or as a network printer, wired (Ethernet) or wireless (802.11g). Another option (not tested by me) would be for one PC to connect the printer via USB and then share it over the network. I experienced problems installing the Vista drivers but HP's tech support addressed it by replacing the CD-supplied drivers with a version available at HP's site.

While installing the drivers, HP will also install a number of applications and services. Of these the HP Solutions Center is the most versatile. It monitors the printer's status, including the ink levels and allows for configuring printing, scanning, faxing and other capabilities such as the forwarding of documents to network folders (tested) or to email (not tested yet). In addition, the home page can be used to control fax and scan operations, to convert a graphic image to text and to launch other applications such as the HP Photosmart Essential. I posted images of the Home and Configuration screens.

I did not fully test the Photosmart Essential application yet but I expect it to meet most basic photo management and printing needs and perhaps more.

If staying with the defaults at drivers installation, HP will install other, generally unneeded or unwelcome applications and services. One of them, the HP Customer Participation Program seems to be taking hundreds of megabytes but not doing anything useful from the end-user's point of view. I found Web discussions indicating that the 'program' was guilty of a memory leak. I removed it. Another unwelcome (to me) addition is the 'Yahoo Toolbar' to my Internet Explorer which I don't use anyway. This was done without asking for my permission. I had to use Vista's Control Panel to remove it after the fact.

Finally, one 'glitch' that occured after my initial installation from the supplied HP disk had a pop-up constantly telling me that the "HP product assistant" had to be installed or updated and asking me to provide a path. Providing the path for the requested file which I found burried 3 levels deep inside the supplied CD, was not helping and the cycle kept repeating endlessly. Some Web research revealed that this was a common problem and there were not many known solutions. I was able to find at the HP site a utility that tried to remove all HP drivers software from my PC but, 4 reboots later and after re-installing the drivers, the popup returned. A call to the HP support was answered and a technician was able to address the problem after taking over my computer, performing the 'cleanup' job that I tried myself and then installing an updated version of the drivers, downloaded from the HP site. The file name for Vista 32-bit is OJP8500vA909_Full_12.exe. I will post an image showing how to get to the drivers from the HP Solution Center. The HP suppport remediation completed after about 2 hours. The HP technician stated that 'only Vista' installations experience this problem. XP or Mac users should be safe.

Print
-----
Ink-jet printing outputs clean documents even on the 'normal' resolution. Printouts can be either color or black and white, one-sided or two-sided. Print quality can be set to anything form 'general everyday printing' to presentation, photo-quality or to ink-saving 'fast/economical printing'. The supplied paper tray can be loaded with up to 250 sheets up to 'legal' size. One-sided print speed is adequate but duplex printing can be quite slow.

The print operation appears to involved a great deal of physical movement inside the printer. If placed on anything but a very steady platform, the printer tends to swing quite violently from left to right and back. This had me concerned enough to move it from its initial location.

Copy
----
The copy function allows for anything from one-sided/one-sided to two-sided/two-sided copies. As in the case of printing, two-sided copies are much slower to produce. The copy quality is good enough to make the copy almost indistinguishable from the original.

Fax
---
I did not fully test the FAX capabilities but it's worth menioning that a lot of flexibility is provided, including the ability to direct the faxes to a network folder (which I did test with the scan function) rather than having them printed. It is also possible to block 'junk' faxes by maintaining a list of the offending phone numbers.

Scanner
-------
As a scanner, one can file the output to any of up to 10 preset network folders or if when the scanning process is initiated from a PC, output can be directed to a designated user's local folder. Scanned documents can be translated to text via the integrated OCR function. My experiment with a printed document produced with Microsoft Word returned 100% accuracy for content but, as expected, the formatting (headers, footers, margins) was not properly handled.

Photo processing
----------------
Photo processing can be controlled either at the console and the interactive touch screen interface does allow for some flexibility. Input is provided by inserting one of the supported memory devices containing pictures (MMC SD, CF, XD, MS/DUO or USB). Some crude cropping and sizing is available as well as color processing - sepia or gray scale prints can be produced and the colors can be manipulated to be darker or lighter. The more flexible solution and the one more likely to be used is via the provided HP Photosmart Essential application.

Cons: Can NOT produce proper COPY of documents with margins less than 0.25 inches. Borderless copy doesn't help. Can't print from USB keys. Poorly designed USB slot barely fits average USB key. No document preview on copy and scan on the LCD like HP has.

Summary: Let me start with the bad. I've been bugging Canon support for the past several days because I discovered a big flaw in the COPY feature of the printer. MX860 is utterly incapable of producing a copy of the document that has side margins less than 0.25 inches. If you have an 8.5x11 document with small margins that you want to copy, too bad you'll have to scan to PC first and then reprint, otherwise your margins will be partially cut off. I've tried everything Fit To Page which should be designed just for cases like this, borderless copy, size reduction. I can reduce the doc to 25% original size and still the margin adjacent to the initial horizontal edge of the flatbed scanner will be messed up. I do not believe this is a defect of my particular printer and the tech support didn't say that either. I've sent them scanned samples of my copies to show them that no method can be used to make such a copy successfully. It has been very frustrating and just today my wife asked me to make a copy of some document the credit card company sent her and I couldn't do it on MX860. I am actually comparing MX860 to HP Photosmart C7280. Canon kills the HP in text quality and sharpness as well as better photo quality especially on Standard quality setting. But when it comes to making copies of such documents, HP easily achieves the desired result using Fit To Page. Canon, what were you thinking?

In addition, try placing a 4x6 photo starting in the corner where the arrow on the flatbed marks the starting position. You will end up with a copy of the photo that is missing 0.25inches on one of its sides. You will have to move the photo away from the scanner edge to get a proper copy.

Needless to say I am very annoyed with this AIO at this point. If you are not bothered by such an issue, this is a very good all around AIO with some very useful extra features. Scanning straight to PDF is very good one and so is duplex copying (unless you have a doc with those margins). Very good quality printing.

But for it's flaw the machine is getting 3 stars from me. If that copy wasn't an issue it would have been 4 or maybe even 4.5.

If you're looking for a printer with all the latest technologies, check out the HP Officejet 6500 Wireless. Keep in mind that HP makes two 6500 models--one is wireless and one is not. This is the wireless model. With copy, scan, print and fax functions this all-in-one is a real workhorse.

Fast speed (up to 31 ppm) and extremely easy to use. The setup function is all done via software--you don't even need to touch the 6500's keypad controls. It links directly to your System Preferences control panel making the wireless and fax settings easy. It uses 4 separate color inks, so you can control your print costs when only a single color needs to be replaced.

The only problem I have encountered is with my new HP pavilion laptop 64bit running Vista. My desk top is a dell running XP, and I didn't have any software problems. The software installed on my laptop with no problems except it gives an error message when I shut down my laptop. My HP 4120 did the same thing, HP has not been able to give me a fix. It's a 64 bit problem.
I'm pretty impressed with all the features and I have printed out some 4 by 6 photos and had no problem using photo paper or 4 by 6 paper. The paper tray holds tons of paper which is nice when using wireless, in case I forget to check before printing.
I only gave it 4 stars because of the Vista 64 bit software glitch.
I am an intermediate to advanced computer user.

What the two cameras have in common is that they work for Mac users. According to what I've read, any camera that is labeled as Microsoft Windows Vista-compatible or UVC (USB Video Class) will work just as these do in Mac OS X, with this prereq: You have to have OS X 10.4.9 minimum. Tiger (OS X 10.4) is currently at 10.4.11; Leopard is at 10.5.1. Both will support video and sound on UVC cameras.

That said, the Pro 9000 and Ultra Vision differ in some significant ways. The focus on the Pro 9000 (P9K hereafter) is tighter than on the Ultra Vision (UV hereafter). The focus on the UV is comparatively lower in resolution; you can see jaggies on straight lines on either camera, but they're pretty visible on the UV, and you have to look for them on the P9K. I would say the P9K is definitely superior, and neither is as good as the iSight cameras built into any of the current Mac lines (but then, if you had a Mac with iSight, you wouldn't be reading this). The P9K's resolution is finer than the UV.

As to color I would say that if I could have a compromise between the two cameras, the UV and the Pro 9000, it would be better than either. The Pro 9000 color/exposure is a bit washed out; the UV is a bit dim. E.g., a blue pinpoint oxford shirt looks barely blue on the Pro 9000, and much more saturated on the UV. The entirety of the UV's color tilts heavily toward blue, while the Pro 9000 goes more toward yellow. (I would be curious to know if the color balance varies by model or by individual camera. I'd also love to see if other brands, say, Creative Labs, differ too.) Both cameras adjust to changing light, but in low light the Pro 9000 is not just a little but significantly better; in very low light, the UV nearly blacks out, while screen light is enough for the PK9 to deliver a passable image, albeit with low frame rate and lots and lots of motion blur.

Note that on a G5 or earlier (any non-Intel Mac), the support for iChat and PhotoBooth's effects is limited--specifically, they'll do the first two panels (color effects, including charcoal, Andy Warhol-ish, X-ray, B/W, sepia, and the pinch, swirl, and similar effects), but none of the backdrop effects, either still or moving.

I found both to work with iChat, PhotoBooth, Skype, and several of the shareware camera apps available. So I would say they work, period.

While neither Apple nor Logitech provides much more support for cameras, eCamm.com has a bevy of camera titles that provide extra power for web cameras on non-Intel Mac hardware. iGlasses, PowerBoost, and a couple other titles provide color tuning, restore some of the effects capabilities that PPC Macs don't get in iChat and PhotoBooth, and provide recordability with QuickTime output. They do good work. iGlasses provides some control over brightness, contrast, saturation, hue, gamma, sharpness, gain, white balance. I didn't find these to really improve the images on the P9K, but they did help the UV. Once you get a camera, you may want to get some of eCamm's software.

The drive comes with NTI Backup Now EZ. I already have a backup strategy (using xxcopy, I recommend it!) so have no need for this. It's well reviewed though.

4 stars rather than 5 because I don't know its reliability yet, and it's not quite as fast as I'd hoped (but still fine).

The main reason I got this particular drive is that Toshiba have a 3 year warranty, and the others all have just 1 year. And $90 with free shipping is a great deal!

This hard drive is great! I had a previous clunker that took up a lot of space. The Toshiba 500 GB easily plugs into a USB port and doesn't require an additional power source. It is very small and easily fits into my computer bag. I recommend this hard drive for anyone looking for a way to store a lot of material and not take up a lot of space.

Because this drive (like other portable drives) does not use a separate power line -- it draws power directly from the USB port -- your computer must have a powered USB port to use this. Almost all recent desktops and laptops have this feature, but if you experience any problem, it may be due to an insufficiently powered USB port (or USB hub), so try another port or another computer.

In addition to being a fast 5,400RPM drive, this Toshiba includes some valuable features:

- Backup software that backs up system files in addition to regular files and folders (great for system recovery!)
- Password-protect your data through encryption
- Drive space alert lets you know when free space is running low
- Toshiba's famous shock-absorbing technology, also used in iPods.

The drive works perfectly connected to only one usb port on three laptops to which I have access. I have tried reading and writing DVDs with no problems. If you have an older computer with a lower powered usb port, you may need to use two ports.

I find it neither great nor bad. If you need any of the utilities, it does the job. The drive itself does not use external power. It uses 2 USB ports. Some people claim it also works with only 1 USB port, but I have not tried it. Installing the drive couldn't be easier. I took it out of the box, plugged it into my system, and was up and running in probably a minute. The Nero software installed without issue. I loaded several programs from DVD onto my system without problems. I tried burning a couple of DVD's, and they all completed successfully and faster than expected. Although I have no intention to watch movies on my my netbook, I did pop a movie into the DVD drive, and it played without issue using Windows Media Player. I'm happy with the drive and does exactly what I bought it for.

Reviews External Hard Drive 1 TB USB Iomega

The units I purchased both had current models of Seagate Barracuda drives installed: excellent devices. Right now, the drives themselves from some sources cost only a few dollars less than the iomega unit, so you are getting the external housing for just a few dollars.

The housing has a power switch, very nice at a time when other manufacturers are eliminating such "frills" and a white activity light on the side, which strikes me as a strange place for it. Since the housing has no fan, there is no fan noise. The noise from the drive itself should be imperceptible. (If it isn't, return the unit immediately.)The housing remains cool to the touch in use.

The unit size is nice and a plastic base is included for those who prefer a vertical mounting.

A power supply and USB cable round out the package.

One of the very nice aspects of this unit is that there is no software installed on the drive - nor is any included in the box. Yea! The drive comes NTFS formatted and, for use with an Apple Macintosh, must be reformatted.

I decided to get the Iomega 1TB drive.

It is about half the size of my old 350 GB Maxtor hard drives, costs half as much, and has three times the storage capacity! I plugged it in and Windows XP had it up and running in seconds, no fuss.

As a test, I transferred two gigs of photos (I'm a photojournalist) and it backed up two gigs in two minutes. It is almost perfectly silent.

I didn't bother downloading the free Retrospect Backup software; I always back up manually as part of my business routine.

Ratings - 10/10 system

1. Hardware config 8/10 ( dual core proc probably would up the price $50 and GREATLY increase performance but also chip away battery life.)
2. Performance 8/10 (720p video is fine, flash stumbles, gaming performance is on par with hardware config)
3. Software config 5/10 (HP loaded bloatware, needed driver updates for best performance)

In short, this computer is a great step up from a netbook because I can watch movies on the plane, and play some games for entertainment. The battery life is about 3.5 hrs which is better than what I would get with a laptop that CAN edit video. I estimate I can get 4-4.5 hrs out of the battery if I play movies from a thumb drive (no spinning platters = power savings!) and dim the screen. I actually like the external optical drive cause it saves battery life! It does what I got it for. Plays 720p video, surfs the web, basic gaming. A netbook with similar performance is $700 at the moment, and this HP has a larger screen!

Reviews Gateway NV5425U 15.6-Inch Black Laptop

I finally decided that I will get the Gateway EC series for portability and full keyboard (10 inch screen with descent specs). Our tech guy (at work) suggested that everything is impressive except the gigahertz speed. I look-up the speed of my PC at work and at home and both of it has the speed twice of the EC series yet I still complain that both machines are slow. So I scratch-off the EC series and went to NV54 which is the 15 inch screen with full keyboard. I'm glad that I switched to NV54 because I later realized how important the optical drive to any PC (to accomodate multiple needs) which is absent to the EC series.

I used the NV54 for about 4 days now and it is lightning fast. At its Amazon price, it is an excellent choice with comparable specs , generous ports, and fewer junk wares. I was so confident in my buying decision that I bought in advance its accessories like its external music sound system, Student/Home 07 Office, Norton, and lately the Outlooks without BCM. I copied my music and files using Ativa mem stick. My Excel and Word files are all working fine. I played the music without external sound system (no time to assemble yet) and it sounded better than my regular boom box. I am a music lover and I know the quality of sound reproduction this little Gateway NV54 can do. The color of my unit is midnight blue and I got it at CompUSA for the same price as Amazon is selling. I am an Amazon customer and I was force to buy outside because it did not carry this product earlier. My buying experience at CompUSA was not excellent. So I got my machine there and 07 Office and the rest I get it back from Amazon.

Music Sound - with external speaker sound system that I paid for $60 (in Office Depot), the music reproduction is rich, robust, & distortion free. In other PC brands, the audio jacks are color coded to match the speaker system but not for Gateway NV54. The speaker male jack is color green and it was a trial and error to which jack I should connect to Gateway NV54. No big deal because there are only 2 jacks in Gateway. I still think that Apple's I-Tune is superior than the Windows. The I-Pod would sync only with I-Tunes and I was forced to install the I-Tunes. It highly recommended that NV54 is 64 bit machine and I followed it. I really don't know what it means but it's working great. I also discovered that my Blackberry cell phone stereo speaker jack fits to NV54 and it affords me to listen to my music privately while working.

DVD Movie Playback - The playback is intuitive and excellent. You can increase decrease the volumes in many ways. My complaint is that the Optical Drive (DVD) "touch/push" section has no color. (The color of sidewalls are all black). You really have to struggle to find the correct section to touch/push it so that the drive will open/close it for you. I overcome it by remembering that the correct alignment of the push section is aligned with the number 3 key pad.

Battery Life - The battery power seems to hold it longer. I purposely use a battery power when I wrote this update, do some chores, and post it to Amazon. So far I used 3 hours and 10 minutes already and the battery meter says that I still have 1 hour and 37 minutes left remaining or 33% battery power left. I opted to use the Power Saver - conserve 50% battery power. The screen is a little bit dark but readable enough. The touch mouse is slower and not as responsive but I used instead the up/down, left/right arrows to move around faster and Control plus Home/End keys to go to start/end of the line. It works.

Keyboards/Screen - Generous keypads size and very responsive. The resting space of your palm/hand is sturdy. The Keys are not fancy but dependable. In other brands, all the letter keys are bigger but the numeric keys are smaller - maybe the numeric keys are 1/3 smaller. You don't have that issue in Gateway NV54. To the contrary, I considered it a little bit bigger and very accomodating to speed typing and for fast number crunching. Its screen is clear and wider which means more productivity.

This is a beautiful machine. Check it out -- 4.2 lbs, 1" thick, Magnesium case, 7200 rpm HDD, spectacular HD display, 4 GB memory, 320 GB Hard Drive, Iconic keyboard Windows 7, 4 USB ports, HDMI port, great WiFi,etc. etc. All for under $600! It's astonishing. One begins to wonder what truck they steal these off of. Yes, my title is correct, "Macbook Killer." Look at the two machines side by side -- they are pretty much the same thing. Yes, the Macbook Pro has a backlit keyboard, ok. But the DM3 has an HDMI port, which means I can attach it to my HDTV and play Neflix or Itunes movies, or youtube, etc. in High Definition. Sure, it has no optical drive, but folks, cd's and dvd's are becoming old technology, and being replaced by thumb/jump drives. Even software will be coming on these. Actually, the DM3 weighs almsot a pound less than a Macbook by eliminating the optical drive, and the advantages of using an external drive are many. Keyboards are almost identical, case is a toss up, display's are similar, windows 7 vs. Snow Leopard has its plusses and minuses going both ways. Yes, the Macbook is more powerful for high intensity graphics, but if you are using your computer as most people do, you will not notice the difference. But the knockout comes at checkout: It is less than 1/2 the price of a similarly configured 13" Macbook Pro!

It is so far superior to any netbook that there is no comparison there. Yes, it's not perfect. It does re-charge slowly, and the trackpad takes some getting used to. But it has so many fantastic features, when you factor in the price, it is the best value out there in ultraportable computing.

I have been using portable computers since the mid-eighties when they were 25 pounds with tiny monochrome screens floppy drives and cost $3000. Now for under $600, they are 1/6th the weight, yet 100 times as fast with 3000 times the storage and much more functionality. Think about how amazing this is! You will love this little machine.

None of this would matter if its features and performance lacked. First, it has a great screen. Text is sharp and colors are well saturated without being overdone. It gets plenty bright! Movies look great, too. I did not notice any smearing or stuttering when playing back DVDs, for example. Second, the keyboard is excellent. It's quiet. The keys are well spaced and have a good feel. The keyboard also has zero flex. Third, it runs cool and quiet. The fan creates such a soft whir that it's easy to forget it's on and never distracting. The palmrest never gets uncomfortable, even after hours of typing. It stays cool, as does the underside of the unit.

I like that Sony places the speakers between the keyboard and the screen. It helps anchor the sound to the screen (some notebooks have the speakers under the palmrest or on the bottom). They're not loud, but they are clear and get the job done. For serious listening, external speakers or headphones should be used. I also appreciate that all the most-used ports are along the sides; only the AC and ethernet ports are in the rear. The SD reader and indicator lights are at the front, easily accessible and visible.

Just wanted to write a review for my new Sony VAIO laptop..well its a awesome machine and a love it allot.. Its fast and easy to connect to a network or a device..

I couldn't afford a over priced "name brand" so I had my IT buddy go with me to Micro Center to pick one out based on its specs. He hand picked this computer for me for the price and the specs. It worked super out of the box and has been exceeding my expectations every since. He actually was amazed how well it worked and went and got one for himself. Since then we have gone back to upgrade the RAM on both of ours from 2GB to4GB and upgraded the harddrive from 160GB (which trust me is more than enough for the novice/school/home computer uses) up to 320GB.

We got two of these on black friday for two of my boys, High school senior and College freshman. Made by Acer with the alpha numeric keyboard and windows 7.

I did need a computer with good graphics and a pc that was powerful enough to run flash and HD video without hiccuping. Picked this up yesterday and by the time I had the OS decrappified of all of the junk software they add to these budget computers I was up and running and connected to my entertainment center and watching youtube on the big screen in no time.
I'll leave some updates later but here are a few important things to keep in mind.
1. There is a little button above the touchpad that turns it on and off. Make sure it's on before you freak out.
2. You have to touch the wireless icon in order to turn on the wireless card. It glows red and changes color to blue when it's on and it's touch sensitive.
Both points aren't made clear in the manual.

Connecting to my wireless router was a snap, and I really love the Express Gate feature, which lets you surf, among other things, without booting into OS. I bought this computer basically for browsing the Internet and doing other minor tasks, listening to music, creating documents, watching TV and Movies etc. I haven't run any labor intensive programs yet (I've only had it for a couple days). I was going to play around with it for a while before deciding to upgrade to the 2GB RAM. So far so good. I haven't had any of the HD vibrations or excessive noise the other reviewer had. The battery life is phenomenal. I can't believe I can use a laptop this long and not have to be plugged in.

My only gripe is the Windows 7 Starter that comes installed. I have heard great things about "7" and couldn't wait to try it. For someone who likes to "play" with settings, configurations and stuff, the starter edition is not the way to go. You can't even change your desktop from the boring windows logo. I did not think about reviewing the Windows 7 Starter edition before buying. I may have to spend additional money upgrading to the Home Edition. If you are going to buy this laptop make sure Windows 7 Starter is for you.

Pros:

- The 1005HA-P comes with all the features you want in a netbook. Some ppl may prefer a higher resolution screen but I don't think it's required.
- It's thinner than the 1000HE, although it seems to be as heavy.
- I think the new keyboard rivals the great hp mini keyboards. The full size right shift key was enough for me to drop my 1000HE.
- The best thing about this unit is the battery life. Don't hold your breath for getting 10 whole hours though. Expect 7-8 hours with wifi and Bluetooth on in power save mode. I expect to get 6-7 hours in high performance mode.
- Windows 7 works like a charm.

Cons:
-------

- The long life battery makes this unit heavy. The weight is not a show stopper but it's something to be aware of.
- Some ppl might not like how the touch pad is integrated with the body of the device. The touchpad is bumpy so u can find it in the dark. It took me a day to get use to it.
- The speakers are on the bottom front of the device so when I had it on the bed, the volume was low.
- Upgrading the hard drive requires a lot of work and may void the warranty.
- I don't like the one long rocker button for the touchpad. I prefer 2 separate buttons.

POSITIVE IMPRESSIONS:

- Battery life is incredible and recharges in an hour (max): I did some light web-surfing for a couple hours one night and had 82% of battery left when I was done. UPDATE: I watched a 45 min. episode of Mad Men that I downloaded and it only used up about 10% of the battery. Pretty awesome.

- Size is great: about the size of a hardcover novel.

- Weight is much better: half the weight of my MacBook Pro, the same weight as my girlfriend's MacBook Air.

- Price point is right: I got mine for $387 and feel like anything $400 or less is a fair price for what you get.

- Screen is small, crisp, and clear: Larger would be easier to see, but small is the point of a netbook, right?

- Windows 7 Starter is adequate: Not sluggish, even with 4 windows open at a time. I'm still getting re-familiarized with the Windows 7 file structure and how you install applications, etc, but that's not a fault of Windows 7. There is a wallpaper application on the Asus website that allows you to make any photo your wallpaper (look under "Downloads" for Windows 7...I think it's first on the list).

- Asus tech support was helpful and efficient: Yes, I had to call when I was initializing Windows 7 because I got an endless "Initializing icon" during set-up. They said something must not have installed right on set-up.

- Keyboard is smaller but acceptably easy to use: Again, small is the point, so you have to expect some difference. I have to look when I type or I make mistakes (normally, I type by touch). I hit "z" instead of "shift" if I don't look.

NEGATIVE IMPRESSIONS:

- Asus almost hides their phone # for customer support on the website and the book that comes with the netbook just lists the website. Not helpful if you don't have other access to web when having trouble.

- I had to call Asus support during set-up. Yes, it was resolved quickly, but this is the kind of thing you don't have to do with Mac OS and why I get frustrated with Windows.

- Have to protect from viruses again: Netbook comes with free, 61-day protection, but I hate having to pay and update protection all the time. UPDATE: See first comment below for a tip about free virus protection.

- Not a great "lap top" computer. It's very small size, makes it hard to use on your lap. Much easier to use sitting at a table.

- Pretty hokey, kid-like Eee PC toolbar seems like more of a link to stuff you can purchase (games, etc.) than a heavy-duty "tool" that is provided to make Eee PC experience Eeesier. UPDATE: I figured out how to get rid of this under settings, so this is a non-issue now.

1) OS: Windows Starter

Runs really well without any problems. I think another 1GB of RAM would make it faster, but I can easily live without it for my main purpose of taking research notes, writing papers, and using the Internet.

I have not had a chance to try out all of my software yet, but Windows Office 2007, bLADE Wiki, Chrome, and other programs I frequently use work just fine. Windows 7 Starter does run more than three applications. I have four open now.

Thankfully, I had no difficulty enabling language support (IME) for Japanese and Chinese. In general, I have also found some things a little more intuitive than XP or Vista. At this point, I see absolutely no reason to buy an upgrade.

The inability to change your desktop image is a mean-spirited marketing decision that I hope Microsoft will reconsider. Not only that, but the wallpaper makes it look like you have a crack or dust on your screen. You can get around this and speed up your computer a little bit in the process. In your start menu right-click on computer, select properties, advanced system settings, performance, and "Adjust for best performance." Your background will be solid blue.

3) Keyboard

I have no trouble at all typing on it. Some owners of past Asus models have complained about a warped space bar. Indeed, the space bar is slightly elevated on the left side. However, I believe this was intentional. When you press the function key with the blue "running man" mark on the left it switches power settings (see comments below for an update on the keyboard).

4) Battery
------------------------------
I am not sure yet how to get the advertised 10.5, but I am easily getting 9+ hours out of it on the power saver mode. It is incredible. The power adapter is quite small and seems to charge it up very quickly.

5) Sturdiness / Quality
------------------------------
The computer feels surprisingly solid and less flimsy than more expensive computers I have bought in the past. It is not the most elegant computer out there, but it seems well-built. It has a wonderful lack of annoying lights. The only one remaining is the power light in the upper right. The blue LED is annoying (as it is on most computers made nowadays), but much less of a problem than others out there. If computer manufacturers would put the power light back on the bottom right under my hand with the rest of the lights I would be grateful.

6) Partitions

My memory was partitioned into a C and D drive. There are good reasons to have a partition, but personally I prefer none. It is relatively easy to change the partition.

7) Bloatware
------------------------------
One or two programs (as far as I can tell) that I was able to quickly remove. Nothing at all like my last computer that had over a dozen.

1. Small size and light weight. The footprint of the laptop is like a 8.5 "x11" sheet of paper (slightly narrower and a little "more), and 3.3 pounds, since it is in your suitcase or backpack weigh not more like a book or an ancillary binding agent.
2. EXCELLENT keyboard. The relatively large "chiclet" keyboard is the experience of typing effort.
3. Screen size perfectly. With a 12.1 inch display 1366x768, you get the resolution of a 13.3-inch laptop in a small package. With 130 pixels per inch, the text on the 12 "screen is often quite low, but acceptable. But I recommend a small screen (for example, 11.6 inches) at this resolution.
4. Excellent performance. Despite the lower clock speed, UL20A Core 2 Duo is much faster than any Intel Atom. HD YouTube videos play smoothly at ~ 67% CPU utilization and overall performance seems much softer than my old netbooks. I note in particular the difference when you PDF, scroll the often very slow and jerky on my EeePC.
5. Excellent battery life. After 4.5 hours of surfing the Web for easy joint e-mail and viewing of PDF, I still had 40% charge left. If the battery continues to be used at this rate, you are searching for - it's true - just over 7.5 hours! I have Windows 7's "system" Balanced Power (and not a few possibilities ASUS Power4Gear). After some tests I can confirm that the soil is processor with a maximum frequency for intensive use in this mode, there is no reason not to let in "balanced" all the time.
6. Very quiet. Even if you do it in a quiet room, it is almost impossible to hear fan noise.
7. EXTRA WARRANTY. The UL20A comes with 1 years' accidental damage "coverage.
8. LITTLE THIRD bloatware. The only (not Asus) bloatware was a test of anti-virus software and a few silly games. I uninstalled (it within minutes, replacing the process with Microsoft Security Essentials Free AV program).
9. 7 Windows Home Premium. Unlike most netbooks that come with Microsoft Windows XP or Windows 7 years paralyzed Starter Edition, this laptop comes with all the "premium" versions of Microsoft's new operating system.

Through the:
1. ANNOYING touchpad. The story of how the touchpad causes too much friction, which irritates fingers. The mouse cursor freezes on a regular basis with a strange gray circle next to the cursor (Synaptics is probably a stupid feature I have not yet) clear how to.
2. GLOSSY SCREEN. This leads to annoying reflections, but in all fairness, most of these laptops today.
3. Tangle of ABSURD ASUS utilities. ASUS includes about a dozen different programs for different functions. Most of them have weird names, and it is not, what can click to do it until you get it. In addition, all seem to have their own user interface) (amateur. At least Asus has on the number of programs was (involved in supporting it by consolidating and reducing the elimination of unnecessary and redundant functions).
4. LCD quality disappointing. As has happened with my EeePC screen, the contrast is too high, and it is an important nuance ISH blue by default. I do not recommend), this notebook for serious photo editor (eg, no professionals. Should be good for most users, however.

Summary:
This notebook appears to be a low point between netbook and laptop-size: You get hit a near full-size keyboard, the screen resolution correctly, Snappy performance, 7, and Windows Home Premium, while keeping much of the mobility, low cost and duration of Netbook battery.

I wanted to) a new laptop (in no particular order:

1. 2 finger scrolling to navigate, or at least in specific areas (yes, 1 finger areas dedicated to laptops are good but not enough like the fingers of the end ... and 2 other w / multi-touch pad, you get "with the Right "w / 2 fingers)
2. Long battery life. And no, I do not mean "3 hours" long ... I would like 10 hours! (remember, every year a portable, battery loses 1 / 3 of his performance, then a new 3-hour battery lasts only 2 hours after a year!)
3. Performance
4. LED screen (GOES with battery), 15
5. Quality / Build / Warranty

Strange as it may seem, there are not many screens 'new LED, I was looking for a Lenovo, but the T400 was what I wanted and the price, and only 14 ", wasn' t a good fit. Dell has gone for most all models of LED, but not a great balance of the fund in accordance with the model number ... Also, compare the prices for a similarly equipped Dell UL50VT. .. 'll be spending nearly 2 times more expensive.

This is a UL50VT Advantages:

1. Switchable graphics (graphic passage on board of life ... or long pasta, if you enter, go to the Nvidia 512 MB to run). Truly, the best of both worlds. The search for impressive performance in sitting behind a desk ... but they also want long battery life while you're away? Who else can offer this?
